GF-7 motor oil is the new baseline gasoline engine oil standard as of March 2026, replacing GF-6.
There’s a new set of letters on the back of your oil bottle, and almost nobody’s talking about it. It’s called GF-7, and as of March 2026 it quietly became the new baseline for gasoline engine oil in this country. If you didn’t hear about it, that’s normal – this stuff never makes headlines. But it changes what “meets spec” actually means for your engine. Bottom line: if it’s been more than a year or so since your last synthetic change, it’s worth asking your shop or your dealer whether the oil going back in actually meets GF-7, not just whatever was on the shelf.
What GF-7 actually is
GF-7 motor oil is the seventh generation oil spec from ILSAC (the group that sets minimum performance requirements for gasoline engine oils in North America). It officially replaces GF-6, and GF-6 oils were phased out as the industry baseline this past March. Every major brand has had to reformulate to keep up – this isn’t an AMSOIL thing, it’s an everybody thing.
What’s actually different
A few things got tougher under GF-7:
- LSPI protection now has to last the whole drain interval. GF-6 tested for low-speed pre-ignition protection in fresh oil. GF-7 added an aged-oil LSPI test, meaning the oil has to keep protecting against LSPI as it breaks down over the miles, not just on day one. That matters a lot if you’re running a turbocharged, direct-injection engine (which is most new trucks and SUVs at this point).
- Tighter timing chain wear limits. Modern engines run timing chains instead of belts more often now, and GF-7 cracked down on how much wear is acceptable.
- Better piston cleanliness and thermal stability requirements, on top of continued fuel economy testing.
Like GF-6 before it, GF-7 is split into two flavors: GF-7A covers the traditional viscosities most of us are running (0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30), and GF-7B is a separate track for the ultra-thin oils. Both are backward compatible – if your manual calls for GF-6, GF-7 oil works just fine. You’re not going to hurt anything by “upgrading” without meaning to.
One thing GF-7 does not cover: the newest ultra-low-viscosity grades like 0W-8 and 0W-12 that some hybrids are starting to spec. Those live in their own category – we’ll get into that one separately, because it’s a different animal entirely.
Why this is worth knowing
Most people never think about oil specs until something goes wrong. But this is exactly the kind of thing where “any full synthetic will do” starts to fall apart. An oil that was formulated to old GF-6 numbers isn’t automatically keeping up with what GF-7 now requires, and if you’re running a newer turbo or direct-injection engine, that gap shows up as carbon buildup, LSPI risk, or accelerated wear over time.

Application matters. What your engine needs depends on the engine – turbo vs. naturally aspirated, direct injection vs. port injection, what your manual actually calls for.
