It’s not about the engine
The most common assumption is that Toyota engineers the engine differently for different markets — different tolerances, different internals, different requirements. That’s not what’s happening here. The engine is largely the same. What’s different is the regulatory environment the vehicle is sold into.
In the United States, fuel economy standards are governed by Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations. Automakers are required to hit fleet-wide fuel economy targets or face significant financial penalties. A Group III base oil — which is highly refined crude — will thin out faster under heat and shear stress than a Group IV PAO-based synthetic. In a thicker viscosity oil that margin is less critical. In a 0W-20 it’s more pronounced.
If your Toyota specifies 0W-20, you should run 0W-20 — always follow the OEM specification. But within that specification, the quality of oil you choose has a real impact on how well your engine is protected, especially over extended drain intervals.
