TL;DR: In 1999, an advertising ruling — not a lawsuit — cleared the way for Group III synthetic oil (highly refined crude) to be marketed as “full synthetic” in the U.S. Today most “full synthetic” on the shelf is Group III, not the Group IV PAO most people picture. These oils still perform well, but there’s a real difference between refined crude and an engineered synthetic molecule — and in much of Europe, you legally can’t even call Group III “fully synthetic.” Here’s the story, and why it matters who you buy from.
In Part 1, we walked through the five base oil groups and dropped a line that deserves a whole post of its own: most “full synthetic” oils today are built on Group III — highly refined crude. That sounds like a technicality. It isn’t. There’s a reason a Group III oil can sit on the shelf next to a true synthetic, both wearing the words “full synthetic,” at very different prices. And it traces back to a single decision in 1999.
First, a quick recap: what Group III actually is
Group III base oil is crude oil that’s been severely hydrocracked — a high-heat, high-pressure refining process that rearranges and cleans up the molecules until the result is far more uniform and stable than ordinary refined oil. It performs much better than Group I or II. But it starts as crude, and it’s refined — not built from scratch. That one distinction is the whole story.
The 1999 decision that changed everything
For years, “synthetic” in the U.S. effectively meant Group IV — PAO, polyalphaolefin, a molecule engineered in a lab. Mobil 1 built its reputation on it.
Then Castrol reformulated its Syntec oil, swapping the more expensive PAO for cheaper Group III hydrocracked base oil — while continuing to market it as “full synthetic.” Mobil objected.
Here’s the part almost everyone gets wrong: Mobil never sued Castrol. There was no lawsuit, no courtroom, no judge. Instead, in 1999 Mobil filed a challenge with the National Advertising Division (NAD) — the advertising industry’s self-regulatory body, run by the Better Business Bureau — arguing that Castrol couldn’t honestly call a Group III oil “synthetic.”
The NAD ruled against Mobil. It found there was a “reasonable basis” for Castrol to call its hydrocracked Group III oil “synthetic,” reasoning that “synthetic” had come to describe a level of performance more than the literal origin of the molecule.
That single advertising ruling opened the floodgates. If Group III could be called synthetic, then any refiner with a hydrocracker could print “full synthetic” on the bottle — at a fraction of the cost of real PAO. And most of them did.
What that means on the shelf today
Walk down the oil aisle now and “full synthetic” tells you surprisingly little about what’s actually in the bottle. The large majority of “full synthetic” oils sold in North America are Group III — refined crude — not the engineered Group IV PAO most people picture when they hear the word. Some are blends. A smaller number are true Group IV/V synthetics. The label reads the same on all of them.
This isn’t a scandal, exactly. Group III oils are genuinely good — worlds better than the conventional oils of a generation ago. But it does mean the label is doing a lot less work than you think, and when you see two “full synthetic” oils at very different prices, that gap usually reflects a real difference in what’s inside.
Europe never bought it
Here’s the tell. Much of the rest of the world didn’t follow the U.S. lead. In Germany, you are legally required to label a hydrocracked Group III oil as “Synthetic Technology” (Synthese-Technologie). You may only call an oil “fully synthetic” — vollsynthetisch — if it’s built on Group IV PAO or Group V ester base stocks. And German courts enforce it: the Higher Regional Court of Cologne barred a company from marketing a Group III oil as “fully synthetic.”
Same oil. Same molecules. In the U.S. it’s “full synthetic.” In Germany it’s “synthetic technology,” and calling it anything more would be illegal. (If that sounds familiar, it’s the same theme as our Toyota post — what’s on the label often has more to do with the country’s rules than the oil itself.)
So does the difference actually matter for your engine?
For a lot of everyday driving, a quality Group III oil will protect your engine just fine. But the difference shows up where it counts: under sustained heat, high shear, and extended drain intervals.
Because Group III is refined from crude, its molecules are more varied and it carries trace impurities that a from-scratch synthetic doesn’t. Under prolonged stress it tends to oxidize and break down sooner than a Group IV PAO — which has a uniform molecular structure built specifically to resist heat and hold its viscosity. That’s why true synthetics generally support longer drain intervals, perform better at temperature extremes, and hold up under load: turbos, towing, hard use, and cold Minnesota starts.
It’s also exactly why AMSOIL builds on Group IV and V base oils instead of Group III. It costs more to make. But it’s an engineered molecule — not refined crude wearing the same word.
The bottom line
“Synthetic” on a bottle of oil is a marketing term that a 1999 advertising ruling stretched to cover refined crude. That doesn’t make Group III synthetic oil a bad product — but it does mean “full synthetic” no longer tells you what you’re actually buying. The base oil group does. If you want a true synthetic, you have to look past the front label.
